Civilization: Revolution- Review

After overcoming my prejudice against console strategy games at least long enough to give Civilization: Revolution a chance, I found my tenuous peacemaking gesture to not have been misplaced. The core game isn't stripped down so much as it is streamlined, and the sacrifices made to micromanagement are far outweighed by the increase in sheer playability and fun. By that measure, most of the game's flaws are in the its core mechanics and not the interface.

The random landscape generation is more likely to be frustrating than elegant and the impact of random luck early in the game has more influence than careful planning. Spawning close to Wonders and resources gives you such an advantage that the temptation to restart until favorable conditions appear is too strong. Balance is an issue later in the game, as I was able to beat vastly superior armies by simply throwing a steady stream of tanks at them. Ultimately it succeeds more than it doesn't and the fun and replayability outweigh many minor grievances. More strategy developers should be taking notes.

The Good: Well paced and well balanced. Challenging but not infuriating.
The Bad: Terrain generation is more awkward than interesting.
Ze Germans: There's little reason to play as anyone else and those Panzer tanks are devastating.

Final Grade: B-

How were the controls? I can't stand playing RTS on consoles because the control scheme is so unwieldy compared to a mouse and keyboard.
